Why this anger—may I be your ransom?

And why this shunning—what, then, is the cause?

By what scripture was shunning made lawful?

    And which messenger permitted anger?

Leave off these follies, and grant reunion to a lovesick man,

Who, for love of you, has reaped every hardship.

He has killed his heart by keeping vigil

Through nights of separation, enduring anguish.

That is why you see him thin of frame,

Strong in passion, sorely afflicted with illness.

Love's springtime, an ally of sleeplessness,

The stars' night-companion, an intimate of calamities.

The dusky hue of your lips has captured him—lips whose

    Saliva now surpasses white honey.

By your worth, O you, the object of my passion,

My longing, my ardor, and all my desire:

If indeed you are called Abd al-Rasul—'servant of the Messenger'—

Then here I am, servant to dusky lips and the cool sweetness of teeth.
