ولا تظنّنّ أني غير منتبهٍ

ولا تظنّنّ أني غير منتبهٍ

ولست أعلم ما أُبقي وما أذرُ

ولست أعلم ما أُبقي وما أذرُ

And never think that I am heedless,

I'm not unaware or inattentive,

or that I do not know what I keep and what I leave.

Nor do I know what I'll retain or discard.

ما فيَّ جبنٌ ولا بخلٌ ولا حسدٌ

ما فيَّ جبنٌ ولا بخلٌ ولا حسدٌ

ولا نفاقٌ ولا لؤمٌ ولا خَوَر

ولا نفاقٌ ولا لؤمٌ ولا خَوَر

There is no cowardice in me, nor miserliness, nor envy,

I've no cowardice, stinginess, or envy,

nor hypocrisy, nor baseness, nor weakness.

No hypocrisy, blame, or conceit in me.

مجدي تليدٌ ونفسي حرةٌ ويدي

مجدي تليدٌ ونفسي حرةٌ ويدي

بسيطة وخصالي كلها غرر

بسيطة وخصالي كلها غرر

My glory is ancestral, my soul is free, and my hand

My glory is inherited and my soul is free.

is open, and all my qualities are shining distinctions.

My hand is open and my traits are all gems.

وما اعتراضي على ربي ليقضي لي

وما اعتراضي على ربي ليقضي لي

ما لا يشاء ولي في العقل مزدَجَر

ما لا يشاء ولي في العقل مزدَجَر

Why should I object to my Lord, that He should decree for me

I do not protest what my Lord decrees,

what He does not will? In reason lies my restraint.

Though reason deters what He does not wish.
