نسقى إذا بخل الزمان بموسم
and son of the blessed ones, through whose countenances
And son of the virtuous whose faces
we receive rain when time withholds its seasonal bounty.
We water when time is stingy with its season

غيري جنى وأنا المعاقب فيكم

فكأنني سبّابة المتندّم
Another offended, yet I am the one punished among you,
Others reap while I am punished among you
as though I were the forefinger of a remorseful man.
So it's as if I'm the finger of regret

أني استحيت من الجناب الأكرم
You attributed to me what I never said, and imagined
You accused me of what I didn't say and judged me
that I had felt shame before your most noble presence.
As if I was ashamed of the most generous man

كذّبتني بكتابةٍ وتكلّم
You believed the liars about me, though you had not
You spoke the truth about me to the liars and you weren't
called me a liar in writing or in speech.
Lying when you wrote to me and spoke

If I lie while the habitual liar is believed,
If I'm a liar and lies are believed
then return to me my questions and my learning.
Then rebut my questions and teach me

For all that I imparted to you before,
So everything I've given you before
and my knowledge too, are the knowledge of one who never understood.
And my knowledge is the knowledge of the ignorant

My grammar became erasure, and all my morphology
My grammar will be erased tomorrow and my syntax
a turning away, and my logic spoke of one most ill-fated.
Is all syntax, and my eloquent speech exposes defects

ومنand of السوالبnegative propositions سلبthe stripping of عزّthe honor of الأعلمthe most learned
ومن السوالب سلب عزّ الأعلم
I knew of it only contradiction and its converse,
I don't know anything but opposites and their reversal
and of negations, the stripping of the most learned man's honor.
And of the negatives, only the denial of the glory of the highest

And of rhetoric I know only this:
And of meanings, I don't know anything but what
I never sought to belittle my teacher, so understand.
I didn't try to detract from my Sheikh, so understand

So pardon this helpless man, for whose affliction
Excuse, brother, my inadequacy which made
the angels weep in al-Hatim and at Zamzam.
The angels cry in grief at Hateem and Zamzam

I wasn't like this before when
were lampooned by someone, he would gain esteem from you.
If anyone insulted you I thought it outrageous

Rather, I knew that I could prevail through you,
But I knew I relied on you
and repel the schemes of time without reproach.
And I repelled the tricks of fate, unblemished

And I saw pottery in serving you
and said to lofty honor, 'Advance!'
And I said to the lofty nobility, come forward

From you I regret the loyal past

And I chose immediate death so I won't be seen
above al-Batiha, like the white-marked raven.
Lying down like the steadfast raven

Where can I escape when my fate has chained me

To misery and affliction with a dark chain

Of old age, but from frequent bitterness

And time has impoverished me and multiplied my children;
Fate made me destitute and increased my agony
and death is preferable for the destitute poor man.
And death is best for the poor destitute
