What name has a head seen in the sky,

and a foot sunk at the farthest edge of the lands?

It has become like half a hollowed-out egg,

mentioned at the end of Hūd and ʿĀd.

And if you seek its second letter, it is in

the head of wisdom, sought and acquired.

Its altered-dot form has appeared in my verse, and indeed,

I have made it clear to every distant one and desert-dweller.

And if you seek its third letter, you will find it

at the beginnings of clouds invoked for renewed rains.

    تشويشه بحر كبرك الغماد

    And its forward reading is always like its reverse;

its scrambled form is a sea, like Bark al-Ghimād.

And if you seek its fourth letter, it has indeed

appeared to its beholder at the farthest edge of the uplands.

Without it, no town of ours would be complete,

especially Baghdad, rather than other towns.

The rearranged whole offers praise to

those worthy of praise, as I do, without censure.

And when its foot is severed, it wipes out

with its wakeful heart the people of defiance.

And if you seek its two quarters, keep reversing

half of it; you will attain the very essence of right guidance.

So explain the riddle to me; may you ever remain in

a rank of enduring merit in the earthly resting-place.
