شَريفٌ بِجَدَّيهِ وَضيعٌ بِنَفسِهِ
لَئيمٌbase مُحَيّاهُhis countenance كَريمُnoble المُرَكَّبِthe lineage
لَئيمٌ مُحَيّاهُ كَريمُ المُرَكَّبِ
Noble through both his grandfathers, yet base in himself;
Noble through his two grandfathers, lowly in himself;
Noble through his ancestors, yet ignoble in himself,
Ignoble in countenance, though noble in stock.
His countenance is base, his lineage noble.
Wretched is he who flatters, generous is he who lends his mount.
