أَقولُI say وَقَدand already صاحَcried out اِبنُson of دَأيَةDaʾyah غدوَةًat dawn
بِبُعدِof the remoteness of النَوىseparation لاmay … not أَخطَأَتكَmiss you الشَبائِكُthe snares
I say, as Ibn Daʾyah, the raven, cries out at dawn,
Of distant separation: may the snares not miss you!
أَفيis it on كُلِّevery يَومٍday رائِعيfrightening me أَنتَyou رَوعَةa fright
بِبَينونَةthrough the parting of الأَحبابِloved ones إِلفُكَyour mate فارِكُloathing you
Must you strike terror into me every day
With the parting of loved ones? May your mate loathe you!
وَلاand may … not بضتَyou lay فيin خَضراءgreenery ماas long as عِشتَyou live بَيضَةًan egg
وَضاقَتand may they narrow بِرَحبَيهاdespite their breadth عَلَيكَupon you المَسالِكُthe paths
And may you lay no egg amid greenery as long as you live,
And may the paths, despite their breadth, close in upon you.
وَفارَقتand may you part from أُمَّthe mother of الأَفرخِthe fledglings السوءvile عَنout of قلىًhatred
وَناحَتand may she wail عَلىover اِبنَيكَyour two sons الضروسُthe ill-tempered one المَماحِكُthe quarrelsome one
And may you part in hatred from the mother of the vile fledglings,
And may the ill-tempered, quarrelsome one wail over your two sons.
وَأَصبَحتَand may you become مِنfrom بَينِamong الأَحِبَّةِthe loved ones هالِكاًperishing
كَماjust as أَناI مِنfrom بَينِamong الأَحِبَّةِthe loved ones هالِكُperishing
And may you perish among loved ones,
Just as I am perishing among loved ones.
