إنَّindeed سليماًSalīm وَإِنَّand indeed ظَرفاًcharm
إنَّ سليماً وَإِنَّ ظَرفاً
وَإِنَّand indeed جريالَهُhis wine's crimson hue شمولاwine
وَإِنَّ جريالَهُ شمولا
Indeed, Salīm, and indeed, charm,
Indeed, Salim is gentle and kind
And indeed his crimson wine,
And his manners all-encompassing
نَعيمُbliss دُنياa world وَكُلُّand every دُنياworld
نَعيمُ دُنيا وَكُلُّ دُنيا
مَصيرُهاits fate عَنهُaway from it أَنto تَزولاpass away
مَصيرُها عَنهُ أَن تَزولا
Are worldly bliss; and every world
Worldly bliss, though the world itself
Is destined to pass away from that bliss.
Will inevitably fade and perish
إِذاwhen أَردتit struck down فَرحَةa joy أَخاهاits brother
إِذا أَردت فَرحَة أَخاها
مالَتit turned إِلىtoward تَرحَةٍsorrow بَديلاas a substitute
مالَت إِلى تَرحَةٍ بَديلا
When joy has struck its brother down,
When it wishes your brother joy
It turns to sorrow instead.
It soon shifts to cause him sorrow
وَكُلُّand every خَيرٍgood وَكُلُّand every شَرٍّevil
وَكُلُّ خَيرٍ وَكُلُّ شَرٍّ
فيهاin it قَمينٌliable بِأَنto يَحولاchange
فيها قَمينٌ بِأَن يَحولا
And every good and every evil
In this world, all good and evil
Within it is liable to change.
Are uncertain and prone to change
إِنَّindeed سَعيداًSaʿīd شَقيقbrother نَفسيmy soul
إِنَّ سَعيداً شَقيق نَفسي
أَبقىhas left لِنَفسيfor my soul جَوىًburning grief دَخيلاdeep-seated
أَبقى لِنَفسي جَوىً دَخيلا
Indeed, Saʿīd, my soul's own brother,
My dear friend who is close to my heart
Has left my soul with deep-seated anguish.
Remains a comforting companion
