وَإِنّيand indeed I لأَربابِof the dwellers of القُبورِthe graves لَغابِطsurely envious
بِسُكنىfor the dwelling of سَعيدٍSa‘id بَينَamong أَهلِthe people of المَقابِرِthe tombs
And I indeed envy the dwellers of the graves,
I envy the dwellers of tombs, so blissful
because Sa‘id dwells among the people of the tombs.
In their abode mid the silent community.
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَمَفجوعٌsurely bereaved بِهِof him إِذas تَكاثَرَتmultiplied
عداتيmy enemies وَلَمand did not أَهتِفI call out سواهُanyone but him بِناصِرِfor a helper
And I am indeed stricken by his loss, as they have multiplied—
I grieve for him as foes increasingly throng;
my enemies—and I called on no helper but him.
None but he would I hail as a champion.
وَكُنتُand I was كَمَغلوبٍlike one deprived عَلىof نَصلِthe blade of سَيفِهِhis sword
وَقَدand already حزَّcut فيهِinto him نَصلُthe blade of حَرّانَthirsty باتِرِcleaving
And I was like one deprived of his sword’s blade,
As a victim subdued by his sword’s sharp edge
while the blade of a thirsting, cleaving sword had cut into him.
That a hot-blooded blade made none too blunt
أَتَيناهُwe came to him زوّاراًas visitors فَأَمجَدناso he lavished upon us قِرىًhospitality
مِنَof البَثِّanguish وَالداءِand the sickness الدَخيلِinward المخامِرِpervasive
We came to him as visitors, so he lavished on us a feast
We came to visit, so he graced us with homes
of anguish and an inward, pervasive sickness.
Far from woes and from plagues of an alien kind,
وَأُبناand we returned بِزرعٍwith a crop قَدalready نَماgrew فيin صُدورِناour breasts
مِنَof الوَجدِgrief يُسقىis watered بِالدُموعِwith tears البَوادِرِswiftly flowing
And we returned with a crop that had grown in our breasts,
Our hearts nurtured a crop that was watered
of grief, watered by tears that rushed forth.
With tears in abundance when evil impended.
وَلَمّاand when حَضَرناwe came لاِقتِسامِto divide تُراثِهِhis inheritance
أَصَبناwe received عظيماتِgreat اللُّهىbounties وَالمَآثِرِand glorious deeds
And when we came to divide his inheritance,
When we gathered to share in dividing his wealth,
we received great bounties and glorious deeds.
God gave us great boons and rich legacies.
وَأَسمَعناand made us hear بِالصّمتِthrough silence رَجعُthe echo of جَوابِهِhis answer
فَأَبلِغso, how eloquent بِهِhe is مِنas a ناطِقٍspeaker لَمdid not يُحاورِconverse
And through silence, the echo of his answer reached our ears;
Though he answered our speech with an eloquent silence,
how eloquent he was, then—a speaker who did not converse!
No speaker could match his profoundly wise words.
