Turn aside at the ruins of ʿUmayra's dwelling,
By the ruins of a house of Umayra I stopped,
Like the embroidery on a Yemeni's unworn cloak.
Like the shirt of the Yemeni, its cold is unmatched,
أَقامَتhave remained عَلىthrough الأَنواءِthe seasonal rains يَسحَقنَthey wear away تُربَهاtheir soil
وَتَنسِجُهاand weave over them الأَرواحُthe winds مِنfrom كُلِّevery مَنسَجِdirection
They have stood through the seasonal rains that wear away their soil,
It stood over the winds, grinding its soil,
And the winds weave over them from every direction.
And the spirits weave it from every loom,
أرانيI see myself عَلىdespite شَيبِgray hair القذالِthe back of the head مَتىwhenever أَقِفI stand
بِأَطلالِat the ruins of دارٍa dwelling مِنof عُمَيرَةَʿUmayra أَنشُجِI sob
I find that, despite the gray at the back of my head, whenever I stand
I see myself, with the grayness of old age, when will I stand,
At the ruins of ʿUmayra's dwelling, I sob.
By the ruins of a house from Umayra grieved
