ما عَلى العذّالِ لَو نَظَروا

ما عَلى العذّالِ لَو نَظَروا

ثُمَّ لاموا فيكَ أَو عَذَروا

What harm would it do the reproachers if they looked,

No blame upon the blamers if they look

then blamed me on your account, or excused me?

Then blame in you or make excuses fair

قَمرٌ ضَلَّ الأَنامُ بِهِ

قَمرٌ ضَلَّ الأَنامُ بِهِ

ما بِهَذا يُعرَفُ القَمَرُ

ما بِهَذا يُعرَفُ القَمَرُ

A moon by whom humankind has gone astray—

You are a moon, by whom the people erred

that is not how the moon is known.
