O virtuous man, whose excellence is clear among mankind,

like a fire at night upon a mountain height.

    أَغنَت نَضارَتُهُ عن أَمثَلِ الحُلَلِ

    You offered verse, lovely in its harmony;

its luster made the finest robes needless.

How sweet was the reproach within it, pointing to

the sincerity of a deep, unfeigned affection.

So know—may you be guided—that I intended no coldness,

for you are the delight of minds and eyes.

But it was fate, with a need that arose,

and a resolve to return to you, O ultimate object of hope.

And my heart is at ease with you, rejoicing

in every quality of yours, evident among mankind.

May you ever, my friend, be sought for right guidance,

and sought for help against any grave calamity.
