O my friend, you have exchanged your closeness for estrangement,

And made tears stream from my eyelids onto my breast.

And lodged in my heart a heat born of love for you,

Whose flame of glowing coals burns between my ribs.

And made me sleepless after separation,

Tormented by recurring longing throughout my life.

So, my friend, I complain of you because of separation's loneliness,

For it has wasted my body and loosened the bonds of my patience.

So, Abd al-Aziz, graciously favor me

With reunion, for the burdens of heartache have weighed down my back.

For to my heart, O brother of glory and fidelity, you are

A cure for ailments, worry, and brooding.

And indeed, remembrance of you, O my heart's hopes, I have never ceased

To repeat as long as I live, in secret and aloud.

And you have gained, O generous one, honor and eminence,

And stood foremost among the discerning in verse and prose.

And your beautiful qualities have surpassed those of the wise,

And riders have borne them across land and sea.

So take this poem from a lover bewildered by love,

Who sees you as his goal in ease and in hardship.

So accept it, and refrain from reproach for its flaws,

And drape the hem of your generosity over it as a veil.

So may my Lord remain forever gracious,

Surrounding you with His kindnesses and gladness.

And send blessings, O my God, at every moment and hour,

Upon the master of the two worlds, at the gathering and resurrection.
