My heart has become enamored of a human gazelle,

And likewise, my heart has shattered through love for him.

And sleep has forsaken my eye in his absence,

And day after day it has kept scattering tears.

And after my beloved's departure, I remained in my anguish,

Worn out and sorrowful, never free of dread.

A gazelle shot at me from his eyelids' glances

An arrow that left my heart torn to pieces.

A gazelle whose supple figure resembles a bough,

With gleaming front teeth, he has veiled himself in beauty.

    حَقٌّ لهُ في الحسنِ حقّاً ما ادَّعى

    A gazelle who has become, in beauty, the Yusuf of his age;

In beauty, all he claims is truly his by right.

For if the full moon on the horizon saw him, it would hide,

And likewise the sun would not seek to rise.

May my soul ransom him, for he came to visit me

Late at night, when the envious had fallen asleep.

We both spent the night clad in modesty,

And in the armor of chastity and guarded honor.

Then we embraced, as I sipped from his lips

A brimming cup more delightful than wine.

My nature prompted me to nothing but

Pleasant conversation; nothing else will I desire.

Until, when the night lifted its trailing hem

Away from us, and dawn's light came rushing in,

I bade him farewell, a burning heat within my heart,

From losing him—oh, would that he had not said farewell!

Ah, for the days that passed while we were together,

In the best of lives—may they yet return!

How far beyond reach! Regret cannot help the lovelorn,

Nay, remorse will not benefit a young man either.

From me to him, the purest greeting, as long as a chant is sung

    By a camel-driver, or the birds begin to coo;

May it enfold him whenever the east wind's gentle breezes blow

Before dawn, and whenever a worshipper prays or supplicates.
