Indeed, my night has grown long while all people sleep.

And my eyes have kept pouring forth tears.

    لها في حشائِي والعِظامِ وَقُودُ

    And the blaze of fire flared between my ribs;

It finds fuel in my entrails and bones.

And that is only because of an aloof young gazelle,

Who possesses all beauty and is peerless in it.

I fell in love with him when my heart was free of love,

And left with my heart brimming and growing fuller.

I loved him in childhood and grew gray loving him,

And my heart's burning for him never dies.

A young gazelle who shames the radiant full moon when he appears,

And puts the bān tree's slender bough to shame when he sways.

A handsome one, seen among the beauties as though

He were their king, and the beauties his troops.

Whenever we are alone for an hour we savor,

The enemies exchange slanders about us, and an envier tells tales.

A day apart from him is indeed a bitter day,

And a day of closeness to him is a happy day.

Whenever I recall the union between me and him,

Sighs rise within me and soar upward.

Oh, if only this distance had not come between us,

And oh, if only my delight in the beloved's company would return.

The tale-bearers say to me, 'Have you any solace?'

And how can I forget, when the beloved is far away?

And never could I forget the one whose figure sways, after

His two eyes and neck took me captive.

    فليتكَ لي بالوصلِ مِنكَ تَجودُ

    So, O my master, distance and coldness have indeed hurt me;

If only you would generously grant me union with you,

And pity the one whose body distance has wasted,

And have mercy on a heart stricken with love for you.
