علىtoward عبدهhis servant الداعيwho prays لهfor him وابنand the son عبدهhis servant
Before God, I shall thank the Khedive for his favor
I shall thank the lord, the Khedive, for his kindness
to his servant who prays for him—himself his servant’s son.
toward his servant who prays for him, and his servant’s son.
ولوand even if أننيthat I استوفيتI spent in full عمريmy life كلهall of it
مدائحpraises لمdid not أستوفI fulfill completely واجبthe duty of حمدهpraising him
Even if I spent the whole of my life
And even if I spent my entire life
on panegyrics, I still could not discharge the duty of praising him.
in praises, I would not give him all the praise he is due.
ولكنbut أؤدّيI render جهدthe utmost effort ماwhat أستطيعهI can do it
إليهto him وحسبand sufficient for العبدthe servant مبلغthe extent of جهدهhis effort
Yet I offer the utmost that lies within my power
But I offer the utmost that I can
to him; for a servant, the measure of his effort is enough.
to him; a servant’s utmost effort is enough.
وأدعوand I pray لهfor him بالخيرfor good واللَهand God منجزbringing to fulfillment

بحسنthrough the graciousness of قبولacceptance منهfrom Him مصداقthe fulfillment of وعدهHis promise
And I pray that blessings be his; God will bring to pass,
And I pray for his welfare; God brings about
through His gracious acceptance, the fulfillment of His promise.
through His gracious acceptance the fulfillment of His promise.
