I see men content with scant religion,
I see men without religion, they have become content
yet I do not see them content with little in their livelihood.
And I do not see them satisfied with life's baser things

So find sufficiency in God, without the kings' worldly wealth, just as
So do without the religion of kings, just as the kings
the kings have found sufficiency in their worldly wealth, without religion.
Do without religion for the sake of their worldly domains

واعمَل ليوم تجازى بالموازين
Stop adorning yourself with religion in your worldly life,
Leave off adorning your world with religion
and work for the day when you are recompensed according to the scales.
And work for the day you will be judged by the scales

Wearing woolen garb is no act of piety,
Wearing wool is not for wearing wool’s sake
nor is keeping your hair like madmen.
Nor is shaving your head like madmen

فهل تراهُ نجاةً للرهابين
This garb is worn among monks in their dishevelment;
This garb belongs to monks in their unkempt state
so do you consider it salvation for the monks?
Can you see it leading to salvation for the reverent?

and you have opened a shop for yourself through religion.
While you opened up shop in the name of religion

Between the pillars stands a shop without a lock:
Among swindlers is a shop with no lock
you purchase the wealth of the poor with religion.
You buy the money of the poor with religion

In the surah al-Kahf, if you reflect, there is an admonition
If you ponder the admonition of Surat Al-Kahf
that forbids you from deceit between the pillars.
It would forbid you from deceiving the swindlers

And in Surat Al-Tawasin, if you act upon it
you will attain right guidance through the verses of the Ṭā-Sīn surahs.
You will attain guidance through the clear verses

As for the one mentioned in al-Kahf, it forbids
As for what Al-Kahf forbids
ostentation, and then taking the wealth of the poor.
Namely hypocrisy and the money of the poor

And the other verse, in al-Qasas, restrains
And the other verse of the stories is a deterrent
the likes of the Pharaohs from arrogance.
From the arrogance of the likes of Pharaoh

You have made your religion a falcon with which you hunt,
You have made your religion a hawk that hunts for you
and the keepers of falcons do not prosper.
Yet the people of hawks do not prosper
