إِنِّيْindeed I امْرُؤٌa man لَيْسَthere is no فِيin دِيْنِيmy faith لِغَامِزِهfor its detractor
لِيْنٌsoftness، وَلَسْتُand I am not عَلَىagainst الإِسْلاَمِIslam طَعَّانَاa habitual reviler
I am a man in whose faith no detractor finds
I am a man whose religion has no insulter.
Weakness; nor am I a reviler of Islam.
I am gentle, not a slanderer of Islam.
فَلاَso I do not أَسُبُّrevile أَبَاfather of بَكْرٍBakr وَلاَnor عُمَراًUmar
وَلَنْand I will not أَسُبَّrevile مَعَاذَrefuge in اللهِGod عُثْمَانَاUthman
So I do not revile Abu Bakr or Umar,
So I don't insult Abu Bakr or Umar,
And I will not revile—God forbid—Uthman.
Nor will I insult, God forbid, Uthman.
وَلاَnor ابْنَthe son of عَمِّthe paternal uncle of رَسُوْلِthe Messenger of اللهِGod أَشْتِمُهُI insult him
حَتَّىuntil أُلَبَّسَI am clothed تَحْتَbeneath التُّربِthe earth أَكْفَانَاshrouds
Nor do I insult the cousin of God's Messenger,
I don't insult the Prophet's cousin
Until I am clothed in shrouds beneath the earth.
Until shrouded under the soil in my burial clothes.
وَلاَnor الزُّبَيْرَal-Zubayr حَوَارِيَّthe devoted disciple of الرَّسُوْلِthe Messenger، وَلاَnor
أُهْدِيI offer لِطَلْحَةَto Talhah شَتْماًan insult عَزَّwas grave أَوْor هَانَاwas slight
Nor al-Zubayr, the Messenger's devoted disciple; nor
Nor Zubayr, the Prophet's disciple,
Do I offer Talhah an insult, whether grave or slight.
Nor will I give Talha insult, mighty or weak.
وَلاَnor أَقُوْلُI say: عَلِيٌّAli فِيin السَّحَابِthe clouds، إِذاin that case
قَدْindeed قُلْتُI have said وَاللهِby God ظُلْماًinjustice ثُمَّthen عُدْوَانَاtransgression
Nor do I say, 'Ali is in the clouds'; in that case,
Nor will I say ‘Ali is in the clouds,’
I would, by God, have uttered injustice, then transgression.
When I have indeed wronged and transgressed.
وَلاَnor أَقُوْلُI profess بِقَوْلِaccording to the teaching of الجَهْمِal-Jahm، إِنَّindeed لَهُhe has
قَوْلاًa teaching يُضَارِعُresembles أَهْلَthe people of الشِّركِpolytheism أَحْيَانَاat times
Nor do I profess al-Jahm's teaching; indeed, he has
Nor will I utter the words of Jahm,
A teaching that at times resembles that of the polytheists.
Whose words sometimes match the polytheists.
وَلاَnor أَقُوْلُI say: تَخَلَّىwithdrew مِنْfrom خَلِيقَتِهِHis creation
رَبُّthe Lord of العِبَادِthe servants وَوَلَّىand entrusted الأَمْرَauthority شَيْطَانَاa devil
Nor do I say that, withdrawing from His creation,
Nor will I say: ‘The Lord of servants has neglected His creation,
The Lord of His servants entrusted authority to a devil.
And handed affairs over to Satan.’
مَاdid not قَالَsay فِرْعَوْنُPharaoh هَذَاthis فِيin تَمَرُّدِهِhis rebellion
فرْعَوْنُPharaoh مُوْسَىMoses وَلاَnor هَامَانُHaman طُغْيَانَاin tyranny
Pharaoh did not say this in his rebellion—
Neither did Pharaoh utter this in his rebellion,
Moses' Pharaoh—nor did Haman in his tyranny.
The Pharaoh of Moses, nor Haman in his tyranny.
اللهُGod يَدْفَعُwards off بِالسُّلْطَانِthrough the ruler مُعْضِلَةًa grave difficulty
عَنْfrom دِيْنِنَاour faith رَحْمَةًmercy مِنْهُfrom Him وَرِضْوَانَاand good pleasure
God, through the ruler, wards off a grave difficulty
God repels catastrophes from our religion
From our faith, out of His mercy and good pleasure.
With mercy from Him and His good pleasure.
لَوْلاَwere it not for الأَئِمَّةُthe rulers لَمْwould not تَأْمَنْbe safe لَنَاfor us سُبُلٌroads
وكَانَand would be أَضْعَفُنَاthe weakest of us نَهْباًprey لأَقْوَانَاto the strongest of us
Were it not for the rulers, no roads would be safe for us,
Were it not for the Imams, no paths would be safe for us,
And the weakest among us would be prey to our strongest.
And the weakest of us would be prey for the mighty.
