يدعُ الجواب فلا يراجع هيبةً

يدعُ الجواب فلا يراجع هيبةً

والسائلون نواكس الأذقانِ

والسائلون نواكس الأذقانِ

He leaves off answering and, out of awe, is not pressed again.

He calls without awaiting a response, out of reverence,

And the questioners bow their chins.

While petitioners bow their heads.

هدى الوقار وعزّ سلطان التقى

هدى الوقار وعزّ سلطان التقى

فهو المُطاعُ وليس ذا سلطانِ

فهو المُطاعُ وليس ذا سلطانِ

Dignity's guidance and the might of piety's dominion—

The path of dignity and might of pious authority-

So he is obeyed, though he holds no authority.

He is obeyed though lacking worldly power.
