أَلَمْhas ... not? يَأْنِthe time come لِيfor me مِنْكَfrom you أَنْthat تَرْحَمَاyou show mercy
وَتَعْصيand you defy الْعَوَاذِلَthe female reproachers وَاللُّوَّمَاand the faultfinders
Has the time not come for you to show me mercy,
Has the time not come for you to show mercy,
and defy the reproaching women and the faultfinders,
And defy the blamers and accusers,
وَتَرْثِيand you pity لِصَبٍّfor a lovesick lover بِكُمْwith you مُغْرَمٌenamored
أَقَامَhe held عَلَىover هَجْرِكُمْyour desertion مَأْتَمَاa mourning gathering
and pity a lovesick man enamored of you,
And eulogize a lover so smitten by you all
who has held a mourning gathering over your desertion?
He has held a funeral for your abandonment,
يَبِيتُhe spends the night إِذَاwhen جَنَّهُit enfolds him لَيْلُهُhis night
يُرَاعِيhe watches الْكَوَاكِبَthe planets وَالْأَنْجُمَاand the stars
When his night enfolds him, he spends it
Who spends his nights when darkness falls
watching the planets and the stars.
Gazing at the stars and planets,
وَمَاذَاand what عَلَىupon الصَّبِّthe lovesick lover لَوْif أَنَّهُthat he

And what harm would it do the lover if he
What's wrong if this lover has made
made lawful the union he had forbidden?
Permissible what you have forbidden of union?
