أَدَّبتُI disciplined نَفسيmy soul فَماbut not وَجَدتُI found لَهاfor it
بِغَيرِapart from تَقوىreverence for الإِلهِGod مِنany أَدَبِdiscipline
I disciplined my soul, but found for it
no discipline, apart from reverence for God,
فيin كُلِّall حالاتِهاits states وَإِنeven if قَصُرَتit falls short
أَفضَلُbetter مِنthan صَمتِهاits silence عَلىamid الكَربِdistress
in all its states, even if it falls short,
better than its silence amid distress.
وَغَيبَةُand backbiting الناسِpeople إِنَّindeed غَيبَتَهُمbackbiting them
حَرَّمَهاhas forbidden it ذوthe Possessor of الَجَلالmajesty فيin الكُتُبِthe scriptures
And backbiting people—indeed, speaking ill of them—
has been forbidden by the Lord of Majesty in the scriptures.
إِنif كانَis مِنof فِضَّةٍsilver كَلامُكِyour speech ياO
نَفسُsoul فَإِنَّthen indeed السُكوتَsilence مِنof ذَهَبِgold
If your speech is silver, O
soul, then indeed silence is gold.
