أوor استلذواthey savored لذيذsweet نومsleep أوor هجعواthey slumbered
And how could the eyes of the learned be at peace,
How can the learned find rest for their eyes
or could they savor sweet sleep, or slumber,
Or take pleasure in sweet sleep or slumber

لوif كانthere were للقومfor the people أسماعears لقدsurely سمعواthey heard
while death warns them aloud and openly?
When death openly threatens them
Had those people ears, they would surely have heard.
If only they had ears to hear!

وليسand not يدرؤنthey know منwho ينجوescapes ومنand who يقعfalls
And the Fire is in plain sight, their inevitable destination,
The fire blazes - their fate is sealed
yet they do not know who will escape and who will fall.
None can tell who will escape and who will fall

The birds and livestock have reached evening safe,
The birds and beasts now rest securely
and the fish in the sea have no terror to fear.
While the fish in the sea have no cause for alarm

And the human being is held in pledge for these deeds;
Yet man is hostage to his own gaining
he has a watcher who looks into secrets,
With a watcher over his secrets who sees all

Till the Day of Gathering he meets alone

His adversary - sight, hearing and limbs

People of high standing wish that they
Some men of prestige wish they were
were swine, so they could escape—or hyenas.
Swine - or predators - to be saved from this

What will your witnessing be like, when these tidings come to pass
How can you face your witnesses and reckoning
—before long—and you do not know what will happen?
- So soon to come - and not know what will be?

Will it be in the Gardens, with a triumph that never ends,
To eternal bliss without end
or Hell, which leaves nothing and spares nothing?
Or Hell - no reprieve or rescue?

At times it plunges them into its deadly depths, then raises them;
It alternately lifts them up and casts them down
when they hope for a way out of its anguish, they fall.
When they hope for release from their anguish, they fall

The weeping has lasted long, but their pleading has not helped.
Long did they weep, but their pleading was futile
Far from it! Neither tenderness nor anguish avails.
Alas, no tenderness avails, nor grief

Does knowledge benefit the one who knows it before death?
Can learning help the scholar before death?
People have asked there to return, but they did not return.
Many have trodden this path, but turned not back
