رأيتُ الذنوبَ تميتُ القلوب

رأيتُ الذنوبَ تميتُ القلوب

ويتبِعُها الذلَّ إدمانُها

ويتبِعُها الذلَّ إدمانُها

I have seen sins put hearts to death,

I saw that sins deaden hearts.

and humiliation attend persistence in them.

And persisting in them brings humiliation in their wake.

وتركُ الذنوب حياةُ القلوبِ

وتركُ الذنوب حياةُ القلوبِ

وخيرٌ لنفسكَ عصيانُها

وخيرٌ لنفسكَ عصيانُها

Forsaking sins is the life of hearts,

And abandoning sins is life for hearts.

and it is better for your soul to defy them.

And defying your soul is better for it.

وهل بدَّلَ الدينَ إلا الملوكُ

وهل بدَّلَ الدينَ إلا الملوكُ

وأحبار سوءٍ ورُهبانُها

وأحبار سوءٍ ورُهبانُها

Who has altered the faith except kings,

And who has altered religion but kings,

wicked clerics, and its monks?

And wicked scholars and its monks?

وباعوا النفوسَ فلم يربَحوا

وباعوا النفوسَ فلم يربَحوا

ولم تغلُ في البيع أثمانُها

ولم تغلُ في البيع أثمانُها

They sold their souls, yet made no profit,

And they sold their souls, yet made no profit.

nor did their price run high in the sale.

Nor were their prices high in the sale.

لقَد رتعَ القومُ في جيفةٍ

لقَد رتعَ القومُ في جيفةٍ

يبينُ لذي العقلِ أنتانُها

يبينُ لذي العقلِ أنتانُها

The people have indeed grazed upon a carcass;

Indeed, the people have feasted on a carcass.

its foul stench is plain to anyone possessed of reason.

Its foul odors are plain to anyone with reason.
