I remembered the days of those who have passed away,

So it stirred my tears to pour in torrents.

So I turned their memory over within my soul,

That this might bring softness to the heart.

So I spoke to my soul and reproached it,

And the soul had refused to soften:

Do you forget the traces of those who have passed,

And the treacherous age you have long endured,

And death's knocking and its blows,

And the wailers' cries amid what afflicted us?

And we are never free of some calamity

At which the heart flies in terror and sorrow.

Nor does the soul grow calm before I am struck

By another sharp blow that strikes the vital artery.

Or else in swift succession upon its heels,

And long have they all but broken our backs.

And every day and every evening

    Death's calamities befall us.

And either nearby you are [shot at] with it,

Or to the left, or to the right.

When terror over one dead person subsides,

It surprises us with another, announcing calm's death.

And how can one endure, given what I see?

You will surely die before long.

I buried my loved ones, sparing them nothing,

Heaping earth and mud upon them.

And they were dear to their families,

And how dear they are today as well, lying buried!

The grave has indeed hidden in its burial niche

Noble dignity, goodness, and worldly life.

And my companions and kin—I parted from them,

And I used to see them as companions gathered in bands.

    As though their families' returning

Were the yearning cries of pregnant she-camels fond of such cries.

    فقد كنتُ بالقرب منهم ضَنينا

    And true brothers—we have followed them;

For I had cherished being close to them.

    أظَلُّ على ذكرهم مستكينا

    And the home grew desolate after their departure;

I remain bowed down at the memory of them.

I see people weeping for their dead,

And the living last no longer than the dead.

Is their destiny not to perish,

Even if the people live for years more?

They are driven inexorably toward their day,

Thus they are being driven toward death, yet unaware.

So if you weep for those who have passed,

Then weep for yourself among the perishing.

And weep for yourself as hard as you can,

Whether you are weeping or heedless.

    سيتّبِعُ الآخرُ الأولينا

    For the path is one for you all;

The later will follow those who came before.

And if you are beguiled by life,

Your soul enticing you with fancies about it,

So [call out to] your graves, then look

At the places where your family and nearest kin fell:

Where they have gone, and what they encountered,

And they were like you in their homes for a time.

And where are the kings and the wise,

And those you used to approve of or fear?

And where are those who built before us,

Generations we follow, themselves following generations?

I was brought two teeth that had decayed,

From the fortress, when they unearthed what lay buried.

    تقلّ بها الكف شيئا رزينا

    One of them weighed two mann-units;

The hand, bearing it, lifts something weighty.

    Thirty more, matching its size—

Blessed are You, O best of creators!

What, then, could suffice for their mouths?

Blessed are You, O best of creators!

    Whenever I remember their bodies,

The soul grows small until it is humbled.

    وبادوا جميعا فهم خامِدونا

    And each, for all that, met death;

And they all perished, so they lie extinguished.
