أَلَمdid ... not? تَكُyou be لَوif حَفِظتَyou preserved الوُدَّaffection مِنّيfrom me
أَلَم تَكُ لَو حَفِظتَ الوُدَّ مِنّي
كَماas بَينَbetween المَحاجِرِthe eye sockets وَالحِجاجِand the bony rims of the eyes
كَما بَينَ المَحاجِرِ وَالحِجاجِ
Would you not have been, had you preserved my affection,
Had you kept the affection from me
as close as the eye sockets and their bony rims?
As between the pebbles and stones
فَحُلتَyet you turned away عَنِfrom الصَفاءِsincerity وَخُنتَand you betrayed عَهديmy covenant
فَحُلتَ عَنِ الصَفاءِ وَخُنتَ عَهدي
بِلاwithout سَبَبٍa cause كَذيlike one possessing الضِغنِa grudge المُداجيwho feigns friendship
بِلا سَبَبٍ كَذي الضِغنِ المُداجي
Yet you turned from sincerity and betrayed my covenant,
You would have attained purity and betrayed my covenant
without cause, like one who bears a grudge but feigns friendship.
Without cause like hostile grudges
