شَرِبتُI drank طَبَرزَذاًrock sugar بِغَريضِwith fresh water مُزنٍrainclouds
كَذَوبِlike the meltwater of الثَلجِsnow خالَطَهُmingled with it الرُضابُsweet saliva
I drank rock sugar with fresh water from rainclouds,
I drank Tabarzad with a cheerful friend
Like snowmelt mingled with sweet saliva.
Like melting snow mixed with water pure,
وَماand not هُوَit بِالطَبَرزَذِthrough the rock sugar طابَbecame sweet لَكِنbut
بِمَسِّكَby your touch إِنَّهُindeed it طابَbecame sweet الشَرابُthe drink
And it was not the rock sugar that made it sweet, but
Yet it was not the water that was sweet
By your touch, indeed, the drink became sweet.
But it was your touch that made the drink alluring.
وَأَنتَand you إِذاwhen وَطِئتَyou trod upon تُرابَthe soil of أَرضٍa land
يَطيبُgrows fragrant إِذاwhen مَشَيتَyou walked بِهاin it التُرابُthe soil
And when you tread upon a land’s soil,
And when you tread on any dusty soil,
The soil grows fragrant when you walk there.
Dust turns aromatic when you walk on it.
لِأَنَّbecause نَداكَyour bounty (your dew) يُطفيquenches المَحلَdrought عَنهاfrom it
وَتُحييهاand you revive it أَياديكَyour hands (your favors) الرِطابُmoist
For your bounty quenches its drought,
For your generosity takes away its poverty
And your moist hands bring it to life.
And rain from your hands moistens it.
