اِصبِر إِذا عَضَّكَ الزَمانُ وَمَن

اِصبِر إِذا عَضَّكَ الزَمانُ وَمَن

أَصبَرُ عِندَ الزَمانِ مِن رَجُلِه

أَصبَرُ عِندَ الزَمانِ مِن رَجُلِه

Be patient when Time bites you—and who

Be patient if time wounds you, and who

is more patient in the face of Time than its own man?

Is more patient with time than his feet?

وَلا تُهِن لِلصَديقِ تُكرِمُهُ

وَلا تُهِن لِلصَديقِ تُكرِمُهُ

نَفسَكَ حَتّى تُعَدَّ مِن خَوَلِه

نَفسَكَ حَتّى تُعَدَّ مِن خَوَلِه

And do not, for a friend you honor, abase

Do not disgrace yourself for a friend - honor him

yourself until you are counted among his servants.

Until you are counted among his fools.

يَحمِلُ أَثقالَهُ عَلَيكَ كَما

يَحمِلُ أَثقالَهُ عَلَيكَ كَما

يَحمِلُ أَثقالَهُ عَلى جَمَلِه

يَحمِلُ أَثقالَهُ عَلى جَمَلِه

He loads his burdens onto you, just as

He loads his burdens upon you as

he loads his burdens onto his camel.

He loads his burdens upon his camel.

وَلَستَ مُستَبقِياً أَخاً لَكَ لا

وَلَستَ مُستَبقِياً أَخاً لَكَ لا

تَصفَحُ عَمّا يَكونُ مِن زَلَلِه

تَصفَحُ عَمّا يَكونُ مِن زَلَلِه

And you will not keep a brother for yourself if you do not

You are not his brother competing with him, do not

pardon whatever lapses he may make.

Overlook what comes from his mistakes.

لَيسَ الفَتى بِالَّذي يَحولُ عَنِ ال

لَيسَ الفَتى بِالَّذي يَحولُ عَنِ ال

عَهدِ وَيُؤتى الصَديقُ مِن قِبَلِه

عَهدِ وَيُؤتى الصَديقُ مِن قِبَلِه

The true man is not one who turns away from the

The youth is not one who turns away from

pledge, and through whom a friend comes to harm.

Promises, yet the friend comes to him.
