I turn away as a courteous man would,

when a loving friend changes his ways.

And I do not seek reconciliation with a companion

when he sets his mind on estrangement.

    But I sever his cord,

and that is how I deal with his kind.

And whenever he confidently asserts a right of his,

I acknowledge his right to assert it.

And I, whatever his state may be—

whether affection turns away or draws near—

surely safeguard the best of what lies between us,

by preserving brotherhood and honoring it.
