سَيداًa chief مِنهاamong them وَمَنand whoever لَمّاnot yet يَسُدbecomes chief
You two, convey to all of Sahm, every one of them,
Deliver a message altogether
a chief among them and whoever has not yet become chief,
To the master among them and to those ungirt
مَنطِقاًa message يَمضيproceeds إِلىto جُلِّهمmost of them
أَنَكُمthat you أَنتُمyou yourselves أَزرىmy strength وَعَضُدand a supporting arm
a message that reaches most of them:
With eloquence reaching all of them
that you yourselves are my strength and supporting arm.
That you are the most helpful and supportive
ثُمَّthen عَدِّpass on القَولَthe words إِنif أَفهَمتَهُyou have made it understood
عِندَbefore مَنone who يَحفَظُkeeps إَيمانَfaithfulness العَهدthe covenant
Then pass the words along, if you have made them understood,
Then recount the words, if you understand them,
before one who keeps faith with the covenant.
To the one who keeps the covenant of faith
ذَلِكَthat العاصُal-ʿĀṣ بِنson of سُلمىSulmā إِنَّهُindeed he
رَفعَraised الذِكرَrenown فَقُلso speak فيهِof him وَزِدand add more
That is al-ʿĀṣ ibn Sulmā; indeed, he
That man is Al-As bin Sulma, verily he
has brought renown—so speak of him, and add more.
Elevated renown, so speak of him and increase
نَبتَgrew العائِلُthe needy man فيin أَكنافِهِhis shelter
مَنبَتُthe growth العيصِthe thicket مِنof السَدرِthe lote trees الزَبَدdensely leafed
The needy man grew within his shelter,
The family sprouted in his embrace
as a thicket of densely leafed lote trees grows.
Like sprouts of lote-trees from brittle branches
فَفَداهُso may it ransom him المَوتُdeath إِنif حاوَلَهُassails him
شَكِسharsh شَيمَةnature جَلدstout الكَبِدthe liver
So may death ransom him, should he be assailed
So death ransomed him if it challenged him
by one harsh in nature, stout of liver.
It broke the valor of brave skin
