Lo, tears have streamed from your eyes,
and pieces have broken away from the cord of youth.

Far lies the dwelling of the one you love, and scattered
are the tribe's paths by a home that bereaves you of your beloved.
وَلَيسَand there is no لِماfor what وَلّىhas passed عَلىfor ذيone possessed of حَرارَةٍburning longing
وَإِنand even if طالَlasts long تَذرافُthe streaming of الدُموعِtears رُجوعُreturn
And for one burning with longing, what has passed has no
return, though the streaming of tears lasts long.

So leave that—but has Umm Malik heard
the tales of my people—news spreads abroad—

and how we led sleek horses toward the people of Yathrib,
noble steeds, some home-bred and some brought from afar,
عَشيةَon the evening سِرناwe marched فيin لُهامٍa vast host يَقودُناleading us

ضَرورُa scourge of الأَعاديenemies لِلصَديقِto a friend نَفوعُvery beneficial
on the evening we marched in a vast host, led by
a scourge of enemies, a boon to friends?
نَشُدُّwe fasten عَلَيناupon ourselves كُلَّevery رَغفٍcoat of mail كَأَنَّهاas though it were

We fasten every coat of mail upon ourselves, as though it were
a still pool at the bend of the two valleys.
فَلَمّاthen when رَأوناthey saw us خالَطَتهُمpervaded them مَهابَةٌdread

وَعايَنَهُمand confronted them أَمرٌan ordeal هُناكَthere فَظيعُterrible
Then, when they saw us, dread filled them,
and a terrible ordeal confronted them there.
وَوَدّواand they wished لَوif only اَنَّthat الأَرضَthe earth يَنشَقُّwould split ظَهرُهاits surface

And they wished the earth's surface would split open
beneath them; even the steadfast among them were panic-stricken there.
وَقَدand already عُرِّيَتwere unsheathed بِيضٌbright swords كَأَنَّas though وَميضَهاtheir flashing

حَريقٌa fire تَرَقّىclimbed upward فيthrough الأَباءِthe reeds سَريعُswift
And bright swords had been unsheathed, their flashing like
a swift fire climbing through the reeds.
بِأَيمانِناwith our right hands نَعلوwe strike بِهاwith them كُلَّevery هامَةٍhead
وَمِنهاand from them سِمامٌpoison لِلعَدوِّfor the enemy ذَريعُswiftly fatal
With our right hands, we strike every head with them,
and from them comes swiftly fatal poison for the foe.
فَغادَرنَso they left قَتلىthe slain of الأَوسِAws عاصِبَةًgathered بِهُمaround them

So they left the slain of Aws, surrounded
by hyenas and birds that alight to seek food.
وَجَمعُand the host of بَنيthe sons of النَجارِal-Najjar فيin كُلِّevery تَلعَةٍgully

And the host of Banu al-Najjar, in every gully,
bore fresh blood on their bodies from the blades' blows.
وَلَولاand but for عُلوُّthe height of الشِعبِthe mountain pass غادَرنَthey would have left أَحمَداAhmad
وَلَكِنbut عَلاhe climbed high وَالسَمهَريُّand the stout lances شَروعُleveled
But for the height of the mountain pass, they would have left Ahmad slain—
but he climbed high while the stout lances were leveled—
كَماjust as غادَرَتthey left فيin الكَرِّthe charge حَمزَةَHamza ثاوياًlying fallen

وَفيand in صَدرِهِhis chest ماضيkeen الشَباةِof point وَقيعُa honed weapon
just as they left Hamza lying fallen in the charge,
with a keen-pointed, honed weapon in his chest.
وَنُعمانَand Nu'man قَدalready غادَرنَthey left تَحتَbeneath لِوائِهِhis banner

And Nu'man they had left beneath his banner,
on his flesh birds alighting and tearing into it,
بِأُحدٍat Uhud وَأَرماحُand the spears of الكُماةِthe warriors يُرِدنَهُمseek them out
كَماjust as غالَwore away أَشطانَthe ropes of الدِلاءِbuckets نُزوعُhauling
at Uhud, while the warriors' spears sought them out,
as hauling wears away the ropes of buckets.
