ياO غرابَraven of البَينِparting أَسمَعتَyou have made yourself heard فَقُلso speak
إِنَّماonly تَنطِقُyou utter شَيئاًsomething قَدalready فُعِلhas been done
O raven of parting, you have made yourself heard—so speak.
You speak only of what has already been done.
إِنَّindeed لِلخَيرِfor good وَلِلشَّرِّand for evil مَدىًa limit
وَكِلاand both of ذَلِكَthat وَجهٌan aspect وَقبلand a direction
Indeed, good and evil each have a limit,
And both have an aspect and a direction.
وَالعَطياتُand gifts خِساسٌpaltry بَينَهُمamong them
وَسَواءٌand alike قَبرُthe grave of مُثرٍa wealthy man وَمُقِلand a poor man
And gifts among them are paltry,
And the rich man's grave is like the poor man's.
كُلُّevery عَيشٍlife وَنَعيمٍand bliss زائِلٌpassing away
وَبَناتُand the daughters of الدَهرِTime يَلعَبنَplay بِكُلwith everyone
All life and bliss pass away,
And the daughters of Time play with everyone.
أَبلِغاyou two, convey حسّانَHassan عَنّىfrom me آيَةًa message
فَقَريضُfor the verse of الشِعرِpoetry يِشفىheals ذاthe one with الغُلَلburning thirst
You two, carry a message from me to Hassan:
For poetic verse heals the one with burning thirst.
كَمhow many تَرىyou see بِالجَرِّat al-Jarr مِنof جُمجُمَةٍa skull
وَأَكُفٍّand hands قَدalready أُتِرّتhave been severed وَرِجِلand a foot
How many skulls you see at al-Jarr,
And hands already severed, and feet,
وَسَرابيلَand garments حِسانٍfine سُرِّبَتwere stripped away

And fine garments stripped away
From armored warriors slain on the battlefield.
كَمhow many قَتَلناwe killed مِنof كَريمٍa noble man سَيدٍa chief
ماجِدِnoble الحَدَّينِboth sides مِقدامٌdaring بَطَلa hero
How many a noble chief we killed,
Noble on both sides, a daring hero,
صادِقِtrue in النَجدَةِvalor قَرمٍa champion بارِعٍoutstanding
غَيرِnot مُلتاثٍfaltering لَدىat وَقعُthe blows of الأَسَلspears
True in valor, an outstanding champion,
Not faltering at the thrusts of spears.
فَسَلِso ask المِهراسَal-Mihras مَنwho ساكِنُهُits inhabitant
بَينَamong أَقحافٍskulls وَهامٍand heads كَالحَجَلlike partridges
So ask al-Mihras who inhabits it,
Among skulls and heads like partridges.
لَيتَif only أَشياخيmy elders بِبَدرٍat Badr شَهِدواhad witnessed
جَزَعَthe panic of الحزرجِthe Hazraj مِنat وَقعَthe blows of الأَسَلspears
If only my elders at Badr had witnessed
The Hazraj's panic at the thrusts of spears,
حينَwhen حَكَّتshe rubbed بِقُباءٍat Quba بَركَهاher breast
وَاِستَحَرَّand grew fierce القَتلُthe slaughter فيamong عَبدِAbd الأَشَلal-Ashal
When she rubbed her breast at Quba,
And slaughter raged among Abd al-Ashal.
ثُمَthen خَفّواthey hastened عِندَat ذاكُمthat (addressing you all) رُقَّصاleaping
رَقَصَthe leaping of الحَفّانِostrich chicks يَعلوascending فيon الجَبَلthe mountain
Then at that they hastened away, leaping,
As ostrich chicks leap while climbing the mountain.
فَقَتَلناso we killed الضعفَtwice as many مِنof أَشرافِهُمtheir nobles
وَعَدَلناand we righted مَيلَthe imbalance of بَدرٍBadr فَاِعتَدَلso it became even
So we killed twice as many of their nobles,
And we redressed Badr's imbalance, restoring the balance.
لاnot أَلومُI blame النَفسَmyself إِلّاexcept أَنَّناthat we
لَوif كَرَرناwe had charged again لَفَعَلناwe would have done المُفتَعَلthe deed
I do not blame myself, save that we—
Had we charged again—would have done the deed,

With India's swords rising over their heads,
Rising over them for a second draught after the first.
