أِمِنwas it over رَسمِtraces دارٍa dwelling أَقفَرَتbecame deserted بِالعَثاعِثِat al-ʿAthāʿith
بَكَيتَyou wept بِعَينٍwith an eye دَمعُهاits tears غَيرُnot لابِثِlingering
Was it over the traces of a dwelling, deserted at al-ʿAthāʿith,
That you wept with an eye whose tears were quick to fall?
وَمِنand among عَجَبِthe wonders of الأَيامِthe days وَالدَهرُand time كُلُّهُall of it
لَهُit has عَجَبٌwonders مِنfrom سابِقاتٍpast events وَحادِثِand a new event
And among the wonders of the days—and all of time
Has wonders, both past and new—
لِجَيشٍfor an army أَتاناcame to us ذىpossessing عُرامٍfierceness يَقودُهُhe leads it
عُبَيدَةُʿUbayda يُدعىis called فيin الهِياجِbattle اِبنَson of حارِثِHarith
Is a fierce army that came to us, led by
ʿUbayda, called in battle the son of Harith,
لِنَترُكَso that we abandon أَصناماًidols بِمَكَّةَin Mecca عُكَّفاestablished
مَواريثَheirlooms مَوروثٍone inherited from كَريمٍnoble لِوارِثِfor an heir
So that we should forsake idols established in Mecca,
Heirlooms from a noble bequeather for an heir.
فلَمّاso when لَقيناهُمwe met them بِسُمرِwith dusky spears رُدَينَةٍRudayna
وَجُردٍand sleek horses عِتاقٍnoble-bred فيin العَجاجِthe swirling dust لَواهِثِpanting
So when we met them with Rudayna's dusky spears,
And sleek, noble-bred horses panting in the swirling dust,
وَبيضٍand bright swords كَأَنَّas though المِلحَsalt فَوقَupon مُتونِهاtheir flat sides
بِأَيديin the hands of كُماةٍarmored warriors كَاللُيوثِlike lions العَوائِثِravaging
And bright swords, as though salt lay upon their flats,
In the hands of armored warriors like ravaging lions,
نُقيمُwe straighten بِهاwith them إِصعارَhaughty neck-turning مَنwhoever كَانَwas مائِلاًleaning aside
وَنَشفىand we satisfy الذَحولَblood-feuds عاجِلاًat once غَيرَnot لابِثِlingering
With them we straighten the haughty tilt of whoever leaned aside,
And we settle blood-feuds at once, without delay.
فَكُفّواso they were checked عَلىamid خَوفٍfear شَديدٍsevere وَهَيبَةٍand dread
وَأَعجَبَهُمand pleased them أَمرٌa course لَهُمfor them أَمرُthe course of رائِثِone who tarries
So they were checked, amid great fear and dread,
And they favored a course for themselves—the course of one who tarries.
وَلوand if أَنَّهُمُthat they لَمnot يَفعَلواthey did ناحَwailed نِسوَةٌwomen
أَيامَىwidows لَهُمof theirs مِنfrom بَينِamong نَسءٍa pregnant woman وَطامِثِand a menstruating woman
And had they not done so, women would have wailed,
Their widows, some pregnant, others menstruating.
وَقَدand already غُودِرَتwere left behind قَتلىslain men يَخَبِّرُreports عَنهُمُabout them
حَفِىٌّone concerned بِهُمfor them أَوor غافِلٌone heedless غَيرُnot باحِثِinquiring
And slain men had already been left behind; their story is told
By one concerned for them, or one heedless who makes no inquiry.
فَأَبلِغso convey أَباAbu (father of) بَكرٍBakr لَدَيكَwith you رِسالَةًa message
فَماfor ... not أَنتَyou عَنfrom أَعراضِhonor فَهرٍFihr بِماكِثِremaining at all
So convey a message to Abu Bakr there with you:
For you do not keep away from Fihr's honor.
وَلَمّاand not yet تَجِبbecomes due مِنّىfrom me يَمينٌan oath غَليظَةٌsolemn
نُجَدِّدُwe renew حَرباًwar حَلفَةًan oath غَيرَnot حانِثِan oath-breaker
And no solemn oath has yet been required of me:
We shall renew war—an oath I will not break.
