Ah, God's are the men whom

the sister of [Banī?] Sahm bore:

    مُنافٍ مِدرَهُ الخَصمِ

    Hishām and Abū ʿAbd

    Manāf, champion against the foe;

and the bearer of two spears—all alike

    in strength and resolve.

    So these two defend,

and this one shoots from close range.

    Lions who scorn their

    peers, staunch resisters of oppression.

And on the day of ʿUkāẓ they

    kept the people from defeat.

And they resembled those who begot them

in the finest essence of great ancestral honor.

So if I swear—by the House of

    God—I do not swear sinfully:

    surely no brothers between

the palaces of Syria and al-Radm

are nobler than the sons of

Rayṭa, or weightier in sound judgment.
