Ibn Salma found his friend in need,

And but for Ibn Salma, no one would have mended your breach.

So he sheltered and welcomed him when he came to him in need,

While his closest, truest friends turned away from him.

So if, one day in the course of time, I gain aid,

It will reach you; and I speak truly of Ibn Salma.

And if that aid is only my tongue, then it

Will surely speak on my behalf of the kindness you bestowed.

He is a refuge; the impoverished live on his bounty,

And the bounty of spring rain, with no thunderbolts in it.

And they know full well that Ibn Salma is their refuge,

When no one in the tribe offers the guest evening milk.

And they know it—or, if not, I shall tell others—

When they race to good deeds, you are foremost.
