Why is hunger mine, and revelry yours?

Hunger implores me to ask you.

And I sow my field, yet the one who reaps it is

you; and you make your sickle drunk on my sweat.

Why, when treasures lie in your two fists,

do you stretch your fingertips toward my morsel?

    و هل أصبح اللّصّ يوما ملك ؟

    And you feed on my hunger, yet are called incorruptible;

and has a thief ever become an angel?

Why do you reign over my misery?

Answer my question, even if it shames you.

And even if you do not answer, the answer's silence

is a clamor... echoing: how base you are!

Why do you trample my wounded inner depths,

while within them lies the tenderness that pampered you?

And my tears—and my tears gave you nectar to drink.

Do you remember, you scoundrel, how greatly it intoxicated you!

So how ignorant I was of fate!

And you—woe to you—how ignorant you are!

Tomorrow you will know me for who I am,

and whoever ennobled you will strip you of nobility.

    إذا عصفت أطفأت مشعلك

    For in my ribs, in my blood, there is a surge of wrath;

when it rages, it will extinguish your torch.

    Tomorrow memories will curse you,

and your future will curse your past.

And your cowed later self will turn back,

with its sins, scorning your earlier self.

And sin will ask: Where is the sinner?

And what became of him? Which path did he take?

Tomorrow, do not say, 'I have repented'; do not apologize.

    Here, regret is your hope.

And no—do not say: 'How far is tomorrow from me?'

For no—your hands have not nailed the heavens in place.

Tomorrow I will not applaud the caravan of darkness.

I will cry out: O dawn, how beautiful you are!
