Why do you not return? Every fighter has returned

    With a captain's insignia or a major's puffed-up pride.

And you returned as an expectation I pieced together

From the pulse of your phantom and the greening of my rendezvous.

And though you clung to my conjecture, what disturbed

The lifeless road's resting place was my eyes.

And a season stretched on in waiting for you, and there began

A season that wrapped itself in spiteful smoke.

And the hills stretched, spitting out their life—

Their blood—and digging for a vanished winter.

And one morning, the last procession returned,

So I smelled your footsteps in the thundering crowd.

And I pieced together your figure—build and features—

From every face in the thronged gathering,

    فتشت عنك بلا احتمال واعد

    Until I drew near, and each man headed home;

I searched for you without a hopeful prospect.

Who has seen you, and where are you? No echo.

I gesture toward you, and no returning man replies.

And to the house's waiting I returned, like a bird

Anxious, struggling on a single wing.

Do not go out, O sun: the forests of darkness

Devour my face, swallow my resting places.

And I have lain sleepless; the walls listen just as

I listen, and they cough like a sleepless wounded man.

And the ceiling asks: for whom are my cheeks?

And for whom are my mouth and the pride of my full bosom?

And the spindles of the rains knead a street,

Sticky, its pebbles made of congealed blood.

And I strain to hear your footsteps; I sense them

Drawing near and receding, like a wandering phantom.

And something tells me that you have not returned,

So I seek refuge from the whisper of the accursed demon.

Will you return to me? Who is there for me? Do you know that I

Call to you, for you are my two eyes and my arm?

    فيعي، ويلهث كالذبال النافد

    Here I am, telling your phantom my story;

So it understands, and pants like a dwindling wick.

You left me alone; my father too left me,

And my sister too, to the ever-growing mourning.

And I lost my mother: ah, Mother, open

Your eyes, turn toward me, and look!

And I buried my family; so the graveyards alone

Are my family, my loving mother, and my father.

And you were dazed, or fell a victim,

And I remained alone, for the cold void.

Will you return to me? Then my night gulps down its shadow

And cries across the horizons: where are my Farqad stars?
