Where has she vanished—into what lofty horizon?

Where has she vanished, away from me and my lovesick yearning?

In vain I call to her. Have I lost her

In the night, or in the press of days?

Or was she lost in the vastness of the air? No—for how often

I confided my passion to the breezes of late afternoon.

And I stood questioning it, my heart in my hand,

Gazing toward the blood-red afterglow of sunset.

The silence of late afternoon answered me; and whenever

I appeased my longing, the heat of my blaze increased.

And whenever I recalled meeting her and her nectar,

I encountered in memory the phantom of the goblet.

And I thirsted until I almost gulped down my burning thirst,

And I cry out in pain: Where is my death?

And I drowned in illusions, seeking solace,

And wove a paradise out of illusions.

And I awoke from my illusion, wandering lovesick after her,

In vain, dreaming that she was before me.

And I think her behind me, so I take a step

Backward—then conjectures unfold her before me.

And I almost touch her; then her shadow recedes

From me—while my dreams bring her shadow near.

And again I listen to the stillness and the hills,

And the tale of the trees and breezes.

And I sense her in every sounding thing,

And I sense her in every living, growing thing.

In the flowers' tenderness, in fragrance's whisper,

In the murmurs of the far-reaching stream.

I searched the night for her—it was lovesick,

The cup at its lips, yet still thirsty.

And the clouds strode like funeral processions, and darkness

Over the hills was like execution gallows.

And I asked silence about her—it was a poem

    In prose, gesturing toward order.

And I stood, longings sharpening an ear

Amid conjectures, like a talebearer's ear.

And the star was a golden goblet; its contents

Were wine yearning for Khayyam's mouth.

And I whispered: Where are the goblets of my inspiration? Yet on

My lips were cups of inspiration.

And the wind floundered across the plains, as though

Bewildered, seeking refuge in the hillocks' stillness.

And its procession seemed a lost flock,

Among wolves, crying: Where is the protector?

And patches of darkness followed one another, as though they were

In the air, a caravan of crime.

And one night traveler turned toward another, as

A blind person turns toward someone feigning blindness.

And I wander lovesick after her, swept by

Longing, while conjectures lead me by the reins.

And I questioned all around me and searched the visions,

And plunged my love-madness into darkness's pocket.

I searched for her; I did not find her in the worlds,

And returned, while fever chewed my bones.

And I stirred my pains and my love, and they blazed,

And found her in love and pain.

And she readied herself for me at our meeting, just as

A beauty readies herself for a painter.

And she displayed her beauty to me, tender as childhood,

    Like morning's pampered, beaming mouth.

And beautiful beyond beauty and its description,

    And great, loftier than veneration.

She soars like wings of light, as though she were

On the horizon, souls without bodies.

No—do not tell me: Name her! For her beauty

Is beyond allusion, beyond every name.

Indeed, I live for her and in her; she is

My love and the secret of my beginning and my end.

And I love her as a spirit pure as radiance,

And I love her as a body made of sins.

And I love her as light and an atheist's bewilderment,

And I love her as sobriety and a cup of wine.

And I want her angry and human,

    And a child's waywardness and a self-made man's poise.

Let me sing in her name, as long as in

My cup there remain dregs of melodies.

I searched for her, though she was nearer than the wishes

Of my heart—than my longing and the heat of my thirst.

And I found her—O longing, where did I find her?

With me, here, in love and pain.
