Quench his thirst, or shatter the cup in his palm,
Offer it to him or break it in his palm,
For he no longer feels elation or tastes sorrow.
He no longer takes delight or tastes joy.

No—he feels no quenching of thirst, nor finds any thirst,
Neither does he feel quenched or find thirst,
Nor rejoices if his dreams become gifts.
Nor rejoice if his dreams come true.

In vain you fill with hopes one whose desires have died
In vain you wish from one whose desires died,
From his long drinking at dusk and dawn.
From prolonged suffocation and wakeup.

So he returned, hoping for neither shade nor tree,
Nor awaits a promise, whether earnest or in jest.
Nor watching any promise, jest or serious.

وامتص ما خط في رمل الهوى ومحا
When he hungers, he feeds on a severed limb of his recollection,
When he craved, he fed on the fading memories,
And sucks up what he wrote and erased in the sand of love.
And sucked what he had etched in the sands of passion.

Or waiting for hope, whether stingy or generous.
Without awaiting hope, stingy or generous.

كطائر جائع عن سربه نزحا
He pecks at sleeplessness, seeking a song's appointed hour,
The nightingale misses the date of a song,
Like a hungry bird gone far from its flock.
Like a hungry bird missing its flock.

And withdraws like a tomb, preparing an echo,
And withdraws like a tomb preparing an echo,
Weeping and singing—neither in sorrow nor in joy.
Weeping and moaning, (neither sad nor happy).

Do not ask: the one you know is no longer here.
Do not ask: He whom you knew is no longer here,
He has gone, leaving a ghost made from his ruins.
He left, and left behind him a specter.

Tend his remains, or splinter what is left of him
Pity his remnants or smash his remains,
To the wind—he did not know who healed him and who wounded him.
To the wind – he knew not who hurt or bandaged.
