O my life, O my life, for how long

shall I sip bitter sap and colocynth from your hands?

And for how long shall I die in you and live?

Where is my final, inevitable doom?

Hand me over to death, for I

find death more tender and more merciful than you.

And if living is humiliation and torment,

then death offers surer deliverance and protection.

    أمشي بها على الجرح والدم

    My life is nothing but a road of thorns;

I walk it over wounds and blood.

And it is as though I trample my heart upon the fire,

and press on over burning groans.

Never have I passed one funeral in my life

without meeting a thousand funerals after it.

And a life of misery, for the sensitive poet,

is more dreadful than hell, and darker.

And I am a poet, and poetry is nothing but

my heartbeats dissolving into melodious sorrow.

A poet who preserved a tear, then sang

love-stricken verse in the languages of tears.

The birds taught him their mute sorrows,

so he sang with the birds and chanted.

Ah, O poet of life—and what

have you gained from it but shattered hope?

    أنت قلب على القلوب مقسم

    You are a weeper, tender toward every weeper;

you are a heart divided among hearts.

You have read life, lesson after lesson,

    and discerned every concealed secret.

So you saw that life grew serene only

for the slaves of worldly dross, humiliation, and blood.

    وهيهات أن تطيب لملهم

    Its sweetness is for the base, not the inspired singer;

and never will it be sweet for one inspired.

O life, you are nothing but

    an obscure hope within despair's breast;

a lure that makes the sullen laugh and makes

the happy and contented weep, and the fortunate wretched.

O my life—what is my life, and what is the meaning

of my existence in it, only to suffer and be wronged?

Lord, Your mercy, for my cry of pain is long,

and darkness on the road is bewildered and mute.

I came into life against my will,

and I shall leave it for the grave, compelled.

In it I am a traveler; my provisions are dreams,

    poetry, imagination, and embodied form.

And my drink is my illusion, and my sighs are my songs,

and my light is the blindness of enigmatic darkness.

    No glimpse of light's lush radiance is mine;

no—and my hand holds no dirham save a fingernail.

If only I knew why, whenever I seek something,

the desert and the sea stand between me and it.

I have not found what I want—not even sins.

Is even hell forbidden to me?!

Everything I seek, I have failed to attain.

If only I had never desired, nor ever understood.

I live alongside life, and yet

my lifetime lies shattered, its hopes dead.

Would that I—life being loss and gain—

had won some gain from its serenity in all my years.
