أسرجتُI saddled للإبجارِfor sailing أَحزانيmy sorrows
O her face on the second shore,
O her face on the other shore
I saddled my sorrows for sailing.
I saddled my sorrows for wonderment
أشرعتُI unfurled ياO أمواجُwaves أوردَتيmy veins
وأتيتُand I came وحديalone فوقَupon أشجَانيmy griefs
I unfurled my veins, O waves,
I unfurled, O waves of my veins
And I came alone upon my griefs.
And I came alone above my branches
ولماand when أتيتُI came.. أتَيتُI came ملتمساًseeking

And when I came, I came seeking
And when I came, I came seeking
My joy, my poems, and my human self.
My joy, my poems and my humanity

From where? No, I beg you, do not ask.
From where? Please do not ask me
You know—the wind's face is my address.
You know.. the face of the wind is my title

If I had a “from where?” before “here,”
If I had a where? Before here
I would have thought wandering had made me forget.
I would have assumed that wandering is my humanity

“From where?” A second time, and a third?
From where a second and a third time?
I exhausted the search for a reply; it exhausted me.
I complained searching for an answer pains me

From my wandering grave in my body
From my “no-when,” from the death of my ages.
From no when, from the death of my times

In the search for your tender caress,
In searching for your affectionate upbringing

About the pulse of my veins and about my language
For my birthplace, from the barrenness of my shrouds.
About my source of barren shrouds

Did I spend here thirsty,
Of hunger, while my orchard is in your palms?
Hungry, and in your hands lies my orchard

The time has come for me to draw near you—where am I?
My nearing you has come.. where am I?
Longing drove me far away and brought me near.
Yearning takes me to the furthest and nearest
