  1. يا ابنة الحسن والجمال المدلل

    أنت أحلى من الجمال وأجمل

    O daughter of loveliness and pampered beauty,

    you are sweeter than beauty, and more beautiful.

  2. وكأن الحياة فيك ابتسام

    وكأن الخلود فيك ممثل

    And it is as though life in you were a smile,

    and as though eternity were embodied in you.

  3. كل حرف من لفظك الحلو فردوس

    ندي وسلسبيل مسلسل

    Every letter of your sweet speech is a paradise,

    dewy, and an unbroken stream of sweet water.

  4. كلما قلت رف من فمك الفجر

    وغنى الربيع بالعطر واخضل

    Whenever you speak, dawn flutters from your mouth,

    and spring sings with fragrance and grows lush.

  5. أنت فجر معطر وربيع

    وأنا البلبل الكئيب المبلبل

    You are a perfumed dawn and springtime,

    and I am the sorrowful, bewildered nightingale.

  6. أنت في كل نابض من عروقي

    وتر عاشق ولحن مرتل

    In every throbbing vein of mine, you are

    a string in love and a chanted melody.

  7. كلما استنطقت معانيك شعري

    أرعد القلب بالنشيد وجلجل

    Whenever your meanings draw speech from my poetry,

    my heart thunders with song and resounds,

  8. وانتزفت اللحون من غور أغواري

    كأني أذوب من كل مفصل

    and I draw melodies from my innermost depths,

    as though I were melting from every joint.

  9. وأغنيك والصبابات حولي

    زمر تحتسي قصيدي وتنهل

    And I sing to you, while ardent longings around me

    are throngs that sip my verse and drink deep.

  10. وأناجي هواك في معرض الأو

    هام في شاطىء الظلام المسربل

    And I commune with your love in a gallery of

    illusions, on the shore of cloaked darkness.

  11. وفؤادي يحن في صدري الدامي

    كما حن في القيود المكبل

    And my heart yearns in my bleeding breast,

    as the shackled one yearns in chains.

  12. وهواك الغضوب نار بلا نار

    وقلبي هو اللهيب المذلل

    And your wrathful love is fire without fire,

    and my heart is the tamed flame.

  13. أنت دنيا الجمال نمنمها السحر

    فأغرى بها الجمال وأذهل

    You are a world of beauty; magic has adorned it,

    then beguiled beauty with it and left it dazzled.

  14. فتنة أي فتنة هز قيثا

    ري صباها ففاض بالسحر وانهل

    An enchantment—what an enchantment! My lyre was stirred

    by her youth; it overflowed with magic and poured forth.

  15. تسكر الكأس حين تسكرها الكأس

    وتسقي الرحيق أحلى وأفضل

    She intoxicates the cup when the cup intoxicates her,

    and gives nectar a sweeter, finer draught.

  16. وفتون يهز شعري كما هز النـ

    ـسيم البليل زهراً مبلل

    And an allure stirs my poetry, as the

    damp breeze stirred a wet flower.

  17. وألاقيك في ضميري كما لاقى الـ

    ـفم المستهام أشهى مقبل

    And I meet you in my inner self, as the

    lovesick mouth met the most delectable lips to kiss.

  18. في دمي من هواك حمى البراك

    ين العواتي وألف دنيا تزلزل

    In my blood, from your love, is the fever of

    raging volcanoes, and a thousand worlds quake.

  19. وبقلبي إليك ألف عتاب

    وحوار وحين ألقاك أخجل

    And in my heart are a thousand reproaches for you,

    and a dialogue—and when I meet you, I grow shy.

  20. أنا أهواك للجمال وللإلـ

    ـهام للفن للحوار المعسل

    I love you for beauty and for

    inspiration, for art, for honeyed conversation.

  21. والغرام الطهور أزكى معاني

    الحب. أسمى ما في الوجود وأنبل

    And pure passion is the purest of the meanings of

    love—the loftiest and noblest thing in existence.

  22. فانفحيني تحية وتلقي

    نغماً من جوانح الحب مرسل

    So grant me a greeting, and receive

    a melody sent forth from the breast of love.
