O companions of the night journey, where do we travel?

And where are we running, running?

Our path is clouded; night covers it.

So it is as though we walk inside a grave.

Our path is desolation, thorns and mud,

And bewildered beasts of prey, and wasteland snakes.

And a maze in which silence is bewildered,

With doubt's bewilderment in al-Ma'arri's conjectures.

And visions spring forth like a thirsty man, as there fall

Around his longings the phantoms of a river.

And darkness around us is like life's gallows,

Like the valley of misery, like tents of evil.

It lies in the road, pillowing itself on silence,

And gestures with a thousand fangs and claws.

Withered, with the stars in its two fists

Withered, like fair maidens in captivity's grasp.

O companions of the night journey, how long shall we keep

Stepping through darkness toward no resting place?

The night and stillness unsettled our steps,

And we stained every rock with our wound.

And we planted this road with wounds,

And harvested the fruits—grains of embers.

So how long shall we walk upon our blood?

Where, where is repose? Do we know?

All of us are bewildered on the night journey, and yet

All of us await the birth of a dawn.

All of us await a beloved dawn,

And waiting for the beloved captivates and entices.

    O my companions, there is a promise between us and the dawn;

If only I knew when it would keep its promise—if only I knew!

And here weariness overtook our strength,

And the provisions ran out, and every reserve ran out.

And we moved on like a phantom, listening; then the stirrings

Of our hearing were a melody like the ringing of raw gold.

So we wounded the stillness until we reached

The house of a beauty they call Amr's sister.

So she served us meat and delectable beauty,

And conversation as though it were molten magic.

And we went away, with a longing in our blood,

Hungry, gnawing our ribs and rending them.

And from the slope a wave surged around us,

Of clamour, like the terror of the Resurrection's gathering.

Then suddenly a village was waging battle,

Now fletching arrows, now sharpening them.

So we drew near to discover what was happening, but

What could we discern—what was this affair?

    Eyes hurling flames, and souls

Grievously wounded, slipping from every breast.

And red bodies striking at bodies

In red garments made of wounds.

And hands brandish the red daggers,

Flinging themselves like vultures at every throat.

And the heart of battle was quenched, so we rushed on

In our night journey, wrapping terror in terror.

And we departed, while night, in the horizon's grasp,

Was a book recounting the legends of an age.

And we bound up our wounds and set off,

And it was as though we were cleaving the current of a sea.

The phantom hovered around us, so we turned

Toward it, as travelers turn toward travelers.

And we heard a whisper from yesterday, recounting

The tale of the conquerors among the people of Badr.

So we listened to the phantom as a lovesick lover listens

To a lover telling a tale of estrangement.

And a voice drifted through the stillness, calling:

O companions of the night journey and beloveds of my life,

O my companions, the East has yawned, and there slipped out

The maidens of morning from every bower.

And the sparrows shake their feathers in the nest,

And banish drowsiness from every nest.

And the radiance is like hands of roses,

Dew-moistened, shaking the lashes of blossoms.

And the boughs are like the hands of drinking companions,

And the lips of cups of wine.

And our journey went on, while the caravan of dawn

    Poured guidance upon every handspan.

And behold, our path was gardens singing

In radiance and love—bottles of perfume.

We are in a stream of light that flows,

And our steps know where they are running.
