بغتة كاخضرار نعش جفيف
Like radiance returning to a blind man's eyes,
Like the return of years to my blind eyes
Suddenly, like a parched bier turning green;
Suddenly, like the greening of a withered bier

And as the vigor of carefree youth
The vigor of unfettered, nimble youth—
Bends to the throbbing of an old man

She returned suddenly, like an only child's return
You returned suddenly, a singular return
After uncertainty, to his anguished father.
After doubt, to your fervent Lord

وأدمت شوط الصراع الشريف
She struggled along her path toward the joyful return,
You endured the path to glorious return
And bloodied the course of the noble struggle.
And competed in the noble struggle

أين تمضي: إلى الفراغ المخيف؟
She stared: whom does she see, and whom is she calling?
You looked around, who do you see, whom do you call?
Where is she going—to the terrifying void?
Where are you heading: to the fearful void?

بربرياً كباب سجن كثيف
And the stirrings of terror showed her a face,
You saw the features of panic
Barbarous as a massive prison door,
Like the door of a crowded prison

And trunks with faces and brows
And the lowered head of a stall-fed donkey.
And the sullenness of a weary camel

Then misgivings called to one another within her, and she listened
Suspicions stirred in you and you listened
To the faint echo and the illusion of that faint sound.
To the slight echo and fancy of whim

هدوء بعد الضجيج العنيف

And as quiet falls after loud clamor
A hush after the violent clamor,
On restless hearing

She let a glance wander, and something met her gaze,
A glimmer appeared and you saw something
Like the nod of a feeble lamp.
Like the flickering of a faint lamp

It gave its life to the perplexed
And on its face was a sorrowful one's apology.
On its face, the apology of the remorseful

You felt a living, stirring thing
Writhing beneath the biting winter:
Twisting under the gentle winter

Villages judged their brief lives
Quarrels and foolish babble.
On the most trivial disputes and foolish drivel

Their pores opened to the wind
Asking after the scent of a loaf.
Asking: about the scent of bread

You approached life to look upon them
Remnants of paltry flotsam.
Remnants of meager crumbs

And the vines there were the torn limbs of the slain;
And the bodies there were corpses
Remnants of bleeding had congealed around them.
Their blood frozen around them

So you restored her spring, and she touched
In two youths: one old, one new.
Two intertwined and delicate youths

You roamed the expanse, and faces ignited
In the veins of snow, the warmth of summer.

Into the greenness of luxuriant youth.
