How truthful the sword, if falsehood does not draw it!

And how false the sword, if anger is not true!

White blades are surer guides when carried

By hands whose triumph makes victory soar.

Understanding beyond how much they sold and how much they gained.

More pernicious than ignorance is knowledge that trusts in

Half-humans who tyrannized through knowledge and usurped.

They said they were the most advanced humans, yet they ate

Nothing as they ate humankind—or drank it.

“What has happened?” you ask me, Abu Tammam!

Forgive me; I shall tell it. Do not ask, “And what was the cause?”

How did Haifa or the Negev welcome the foes?

Who will answer? Is there no resolve like Mu'tasim's?

No—and those more shameful than al-Afshin were not crucified.

Today the brutes of Rome have returned as conquerors,

And the Arabs' homeland is the looted land and the loot.

What did we do? We raged like men, but did not

Prove true; astrology and the books did prove true.

So the meteors of the Mirage extinguished our stars

And our sun; the firewood defied their fire.

    And the trumpets fought in our stead, standing firm;

As for the men, they died—or then again, fled.

And if the colonizer confronts it, they withdraw.

They spread their eyes as carpets for the invading army,

And boast of leaping before they leap.

The rulers—and Washington is their government—

And the shining ones, who neither shone nor set,

The killers of the people's genius, to appease

The aggressors; their offerings have availed them nothing.

They have al-Muthanna's proud stature outwardly, and they have

A passion that traces its lineage to Babak al-Khurrami.

What do you think, Abu Tammam? Have I lied about

Our ancestral honors, or has gold forgotten its vein?

Today's Arabness is different; nothing hints at

    Its existence—not a name, a color, or a title.

    Ninety thousand blazed for Amorium,

And told the astrologer, “We are the meteors.”

They were told, “Wait for the grape harvest”; they did not wait

For the clusters to ripen, but blazed before they did.

And today, ninety million have not reached

Maturity, though the olives and grapes have been pressed.

The lofty heads forget the fire of their proud spirit

When the tail rides them to its masters.

Habib, I have come from Sana'a, carried

By an eagle; behind my ribs, the Arabs pant.

What shall I tell of Sana'a, O my father?

A beauty whose two lovers are tuberculosis and scabies.

She died in Waddah's box, for nothing,

Yet love and rapture did not die within her.

In a dream, then flung herself down to doze and wait.

Pregnant, with Qahtan or Karib in her belly.

And in the grief of her eyes, a Yemen seethes,

A second one, like youth's dream, receding and drawing near.

Habib, you ask about my state, and how I am?

A reed flute sobbing on the wind's lips.

    Your homeland was a saddle on a swift she-camel's back;

As for my homeland, it has neither back nor dewlap.

You fed every barren tract the flesh of a riding she-camel

That had grazed there while the meadow's water poured.

And you went from an exhausting journey to another,

More exhausting still, because the road to rest blazed.

    رحلي دمي وطريقي الجمر والحطبُ

    But I am a traveler without a journey;

My saddle is my blood; my road, embers and firewood.

If you mount camels for distant journeys, then I,

Within myself, ride my fire and go into exile.

And around me are inflated nothingness and clamor.

    لكن لماذا ترى وجهي وتكتئب؟

    Habib, this is your echo, which I recite today;

But why, seeing my face, do you grow dejected?

What? Do you marvel at my gray hair, despite my youth?

I was born an old man; how can you be surprised?

And today I wither, while art's caprice plays me,

And forty years blaze upon my cheek.

A writer's face, thought and literature shine.

The fire of al-Hamasa, polishing it and selecting,

You went east and west, from governor to king,

Poverty spurs you, or the quest leads you.

You wandered until you reached Mosul; extinguished

Within you were your hopes; none of their desires was sated.

But the peerless master's death begins him anew:

A birth from whose youth the ages suckle.

Habib, there are still questions in your eyes,

They appear and forget their tales, then veil themselves.

And in my throat remain a thousand tear-bringing tales,

For fear of speaking out, they grow shy and tremble.

It is enough for you that our enemies have spilled our blood,

And we sip from our blood, and milk it.

    يوماً ستحبلُ من إرعادنا السحب

    The clouds of invasion roast us and veil us;

One day the clouds will become pregnant from our thunder.

Do you not see our lightning, Abu Tammam?

“Indeed, the sky is looked to with hope when it veils itself.”
