قلبه المستهام ظمآن عاني

يحتسي الوهم من كؤوس الأماني

His love-stricken heart is thirsty and captive,

sipping illusion from the cups of wishes.

قلبه ظامىء إليك فصبي

فيه عطر الهوى وظل التداني

His heart thirsts for you, so pour

into it love's perfume and the shade of closeness.

واذكري قلبه الحبيس المعنى

واملئي الكأس من رحيق الحنان

And remember his captive, tormented heart,

and fill the cup with the nectar of tenderness.

إنه عاشق وأنت هواه

إنه فيك ذائب الروح فاني

He is a lover, and you are his beloved;

in you his soul dissolves, and he fades away.

أنت في همسه مناجاة أوتا

ر وفي صمته أرق الأغاني

In his whisper, you are the intimate communion of

strings, and in his silence, the tenderest songs.

إنه في هواك يحرق بالحب

ويدعوك من وراء الدخان

In his love for you, he is burned by love,

and calls to you from behind the smoke.

سابح في هواك يهفو كفكر

شاعر يرتمي وراء المعاني

Floating in your love, he yearns like the thought

of a poet, flinging itself beyond meanings.

أين يلقاك أين ماتت شكاوا

ه وجفت أصداؤه في اللسان

Where can he meet you, where? His complaints have died,

and his echoes have dried upon his tongue.

إنه ظامىء إلى ريك الحا

ني مشوق إلى الظلال الحواني

He thirsts for your tender refreshment,

yearning for the kindly shades.

تائه في الحنين يهوى كروح

ضائع يسأل الدجا عن كيان

Lost in longing, he loves like a soul

adrift, asking the darkness about existence.

ظامىء يشرب الحريق المدمى

ويعاني من الظما ما يعاني

Thirsty, he drinks the bloodied blaze,

and suffers from thirst all that he suffers.

أنت في قلبه الحياة وكل الحـ

ـب كل الهوى وكل الغواني

You are life in his heart, and all

love, all passion, and all beautiful women.

فيك كل الجمال فيك التقى الحسـ

ـن وفيك التقت جميع الحسان

In you is all beauty; in you has gathered

loveliness, and in you all beauties have met.

لم يهب قلبه سواك ولكن

لم يذق منك غير طعم الهوان

He gave his heart to none but you, yet

he tasted from you nothing but the taste of humiliation.

فامنحيه يا واحة الحب ظلاً

وانفضي حوله ندى الأقحوان

So grant him shade, O oasis of love,

and scatter around him the dew of chrysanthemums.

واسكبي الفجر في دجاه ورفي

في شقا حبه رفيف الجنان

And pour dawn into his darkness, and flutter

in his love's anguish with the fluttering of gardens.

إنه هائم يعيش ويفنى

بين جور الهوى وظلم الزمان

He is a love-distraught wanderer, living and perishing

between love's tyranny and time's injustice.

ميت لم يمت كما يعرف النا

س ولكن يموت في كل آنِ

Dead, yet he has not died as death is known to

people, but he dies at every moment.
