Do you know, O Sana'a, what is happening?

You die among a people who die unaware.

    You die—but every day—and after

You die, you are ashamed of your disgraceful death.

And the plague sucks you dry; you do not ask it:

How long? So it relishes its stay and spreads unchecked.

You die, but in anticipation of a birth,

So you forget, or its enticing appointed time forgets you.

So do you search today for your face, which

You lost, or for your other, modern face?

Where to? Do you know from where? Perhaps

You rose without a face and set without a back?

You walk from grave to grave to seek

Beyond burial's stillness, the clamor of the Last Gathering.

Do you inhale the dawn in a darkness without

Calm, without a star to point to the dawn?

Everything within you has grown dim; you do not ask it:

Why? Does none of this concern you?

And even the hills within you have sold their foreheads,

And did not know what they sell and what they buy!

And even summer evenings within you are without visions,

And even spring blossoms are without fragrance.

And even the grapevines within you—their summer retreat is lost,

And even the irrigation channels have lost the river's source.

And even love songs—their longing has died,

And even the eyes of poetry within you are without poetry.

Do you know that the sun above you is unseen,

And that your ailing nights do not journey on?

In vain you seek the dawn wherever it may rise,

While in your eyes is dawn—or the Night of Decree.
