For her who perishes while I create her face,

And lift her breasts and fashion her mouth.

I melt and harden so I may melt; perhaps I

Can kindle her youth from beneath the snows.

And for the letter that stirs her, I weave

My blood into ember-like eyes and lips.

I remind her of her mirror, of Ma'rib's bloodline,

And that she has foreheads above her pockets,

And that her name is Daughter of Kings, and that she

Sells her father in the slave markets.

And she has a girl's recklessness, and she

Is an old woman selling her love to an impotent man.

For whom do I sing? For the sweet, bitter one whose

Fragrance I bring to bud from the sorrow of ashes.

For Sana'a, who brings down all her kings,

And loves the kings of others and begs them for alms.

For Sana'a, who comes and suddenly sets,

To come again—and her morning passes beyond sunset.
