From the land of Bilqis come this melody and string.

From her air come these breezes and this enchantment.

From her breast come these sighs; from her mouth,

these melodies; and from her history, remembrance.

From the 'Happy Land' come these songs, and from

her shadows, these phantoms and images.

Her phantoms, around my thoughts' path, are bands

of hymns; around them, bands sing.

From green Yemen's mind and her heart's blood

come these warblings, echoes, and thoughts.

This poetry is her songs and her tear,

and her enchantment, and her supple, blooming youth.

So long has it sung of her groves that it is almost as though

her fragrant air wafts from every letter.

So often have her boughs embraced it that it is almost as though

roses and blossoms flutter from her cheeks.

As though, in lamenting her wound, it were eyes

from which bloody tears keep welling and streaming down.

O green Yemen, my mother and my enchantress,

from you, enchantment; from me, passionate love and sleeplessness.

Here you are in every atom of me, filling my blood:

poetry that memory gathers into clusters and presses.

And in this poetry's embrace you are an enchantress

who looks out from it, and at times hides within it.

And all her poet needs of her—if she withdraws

from meeting him—is that he loves and remembers,

and that she is a dream in the corners of his poetry's eyes,

and that, in his darkness, she is mirth and nighttime talk.

So do not blame her pride, for she is a beauty,

fair—and beauties are by nature proud and bashful.

From this land come these songs, and from

    her gardens these melodies scatter.

From this land, where the light kisses her,

and where the breezes and the trees embrace.

What is that song? Who is its singer? Indeed, both are

from the land of Bilqis—this melody and string.
