To whom do I travel? The journey has sapped

my strength and bloodied my broken wing.

And how can I travel when my road is long,

long, and my endurance short, so short?!

So I was like a fledgling that had lost its wing,

and its yearnings urge it to fly.

that die, shaken by the bitter cold.

I drag my footsteps, fearing a stumble,

and a desire like blazing fire sweeps over me.

So at times I spring up like a playful child,

and at times I creep like a weary old man.

And sometimes I fling myself into wounds,

as a captive flings himself into chains.

The loneliness of memories drives me on,

and phantoms of fate turn back my steps.

Before me lie mysteries and a dreadful secret,

and behind me, torment and a bitter past.

Where shall I go? And should I turn back?

Ahead is peril, and behind is peril.

Here, from beyond my wishes, I was stirred

by a call like an innocent boy's laughter,

like the flutter of hopes, like a brook's whisper,

with a fragrant echo and a lily-like murmur.

So I came to you like one seeking refuge

in an oasis from the inferno of noonday heat.

And your tender love fluttered over me,

a companion of fragrant, verdant spring.

    هداني إليك صباك النضير

    So do not ask who guided me to myself;

your blooming youth guided me to you.

Are you hiding from me, while all around me your fragrance

embroiders the paths and veils the ether?

So through perfume I came, walking to you,

on a thousand songs of fragrance.

And when we met, we embraced love,

as dawn embraces the brook's breast.

And my love sang to you, and found in you

a soft, luxuriant echo, like silk.

and in me you hailed the last beloved.

And we walked together, hand in hand,

    singing much and weeping much.

And a single home was sweet to us,

small as the little nightingale's nest.

And you did not ask me whether I had a bed,

for love is the tenderest bed.

    And have I a bed? I am a poet:

my feelings are rich, but my pocket is poor.

And enough for me among existence's gifts

are rich feeling and luminous thought.

And I draw inspiration from tears and songs,

and funeral wailing and the glad herald's voice.

    I am a poet, O cousin; I have

a sweet, abundant spring of love,

and verse as delicate as morning's dream

upon the eyes of rain-drenched jasmine.

So enough for me and you are a volume of verse,

and a little house, and a great love,

and a cup of longing and memories,

and a song of your stirring fragrance.

When the soul is at peace, the dwelling is sweet,

and bare earth equals a soft bed.

For drought may make the poor man's hut wretched,

and luxury make the prince's palace miserable.

while the other loathes abundant food,

and hides behind an elegant veneer

the cracks in his heart and his conscience's shame.

So the gleam of happiness around him

is like rays gleaming around a blind man.

For how many a pampered man is afflicted by his thousands,

and how many a toiler is content with little.

We have, O cousin, through our love,

tenderness that enriches us and a flourishing life,

and art that embraces our passion, just as

the sweetest evening companion embraces his companion,

    and cradles love and wishes

as the cupbearer's hand cradles the cup.

With you ended my journey through bewilder-

ment; you made me forget its far-spreading terror.

For meeting you is like shade after noonday heat,

and like victory after arduous struggle.
