My brother, all our waking is a funeral,

and our slumber is mute pain.

Will our dreams give birth to light,

as the bud gives birth to the blossom?

And will our valleys bring forth vines,

and the season grow green in our vineyard?

And will quenching meet the thirsty,

and the cup and the smiling mouth embrace?

We have a rendezvous toward which we strive,

and our painful wound impedes us.

So we walk on our own blood, and the road

leads us astray, and the night is dark.

So on every handspan lies blood from us,

which the sun and stars kiss.

Ask the road how there gathered around us

wolves among people that show no mercy.

And we lost our way, while our rulers in the maze

are beasts of prey circling our footsteps.

They ravage us like the Mongols' army,

and are baser still when plunder beckons.

    They amass thousands upon thousands,

and the destitute give them bribes.

And they build houses from the wreckage of what

they wiped out among the people or tore down.

They raised palaces whose masonry courses

are the flesh and bones of the masses.

    Palaces of oppression, whose walls

are our wounds, where the blood has turned white.

My brother, if the prince's palaces shine,

then say: Those are our livers burning.

And ask: How did we yield to the tyrants' violence,

so they ravaged here and committed crimes here?

For neither can we restrain them,

nor are they noble—who is more to blame?

If we are noble of heart,

then the honor of ruling demands that they act nobly.

And if they wrong us out of contempt for us,

then their oppression is the lowest baseness.

And if they are addicted to our blood, wild beasts

gulp down gore and never tire.

And if they boast of the victory of the base,

then our defeat is honor humbled by force.

Our means stand above their ends,

and are loftier, and our ends are greater.

For we shun vice, while they, if they see

an opening for their filth, rush ahead.

And if they climb a ladder to the thrones,

the most shameful of disgraces is the ladder itself.

And what is their rule? Barbarous in its passions,

    the serpent guffaws at its absurdity;

and a legend from the nights of Jadis,

    which Jurhum recounted to Taghlib.

And their food is bribery; flies feed greedily

    when the food turns foul.

They saw the people's stillness and became wolves

in the arena of oppression, and became lions.

And every coward is brave at heart

    against you, if you submit.

And our submission emboldened the corrupters

against us, and sin enticed them.

My brother, we are a people whose hopes have awakened,

and whose thoughts dream in slumber.

And our state—all it possesses is

a hand that harvests, a beast that digests,

and lissome harlots clad in gold,

    as neck and wrist desire;

and a sinful sword that severs heads,

and a shackle, and a dark prison.

And its tyranny twists through deceit,

as the speckled serpent twists through darkness.

And how often it claims purity, while the world

is filled with the many forms of its vileness!

And its sins could not be contained by languages,

nor could an inspired mind encompass their portrayal.

    تنزه قولي وعف الفم

    I have not spoken of all its sins;

my speech stayed pure, and my mouth held back.

You see it assailing our weakness,

    and smiling above our funerals.

And with the thunder of drums it makes us aware

    that it still rules.

And it oppresses a people despite their knowledge,

    and their knowing angers it.

And can it hide from them, when it is the one

that feasts on the livers of their nation?

And the noblest of its nobles is a thief,

and the best of them is a murderer, a criminal.

Slaves to desire rule the land,

and a dirham rules them all.

And a sleepless lust drives them,

while they lie fast asleep in their ignorance.

So in every region there is an oppressor,

a fool empowered by a greater oppressor.

O you who have eaten your fill on our hunger

and our sons' hunger—are you not glutted?

Have you not understood the toilers' fury

    against oppression? You must understand!
