A dream of the future and a memory of the past

Are poetry's stage and the poet's world.

Yesterday's memories entice him, just as

The phantom of the one who left bewitches the forsaken.

And hoped-for tomorrow, within his longings,

Is an image of all dazzling beauty.

An image like a promise from the sweetest mouth,

Like the smiles of a fragrant meeting,

And like a little girl's eyes gazing into

The eyes of a boy with a languid gaze.

The poet's world is memory and wishes,

    And longing like roaring hell.

He plucks dreams and memory just as

The presser's hand plucks a cluster of grapes.

    What memory—what longing—has visited me?

And suddenly my heart is a bird's two wings,

And the world in my hand is an instrument,

Enchanting, in the hand of a skilled singer.

At times I sing, and at times I listen

To the tales of mocking time.

Then time recounts, from my father's world,

Memories that shame the face of the one who remembers.

And I carry his memory, just as

The wronged one bears the oppressor's lash.

And I sing the glory of my ancestors, who

Boasted of helplessness as a capable man boasts.

And who were those ancestors? What was their code?

The code of the stupid, ravaging beast.

And their disgraces are an everlasting legacy,

They inherited it, generation after generation.

How can I forget yesterday, when today is its son

And coming tomorrow is the offspring of the present?

And I, a son of poetry—my heart is a world

    Of longing and overflowing tenderness.

The ages fling themselves around me, just as

The waves of the turbulent sea fling themselves.

And worlds wander through my seclusion,

Like love for Layla and the phantom of al-Amiri.

My solitude is a singing silence, and visions from

    Moses' staff and al-Samiri's calf;

    من أسى الشيخ الفقير العاثر

    From a child's waywardness, from a youth's pride,

    From the sorrow of the poor, ill-fated old man;

From the fantasies of devils, and from

    The wisdom of messengers and the sorcerer's deceit;

From the supplications of the destitute, and from

    The swagger of the domineering despot;

From the merchant's craving for profit, and from

    The specter of bankruptcy around the merchant;

From the laments of a lover who walks upon

His heart toward an aloof beloved.

My solitude is revelation, and a world of guidance

    And error, and bewildered certainty,

    ورجاءٍ كابتسام الغادر

    And tenderness, and fearful waiting,

    And hope like a betrayer's smile;

And a love that smiles at the phantom, as

The garden smiles at the visitor's eye.

My solitude is a swing of thoughts

    Circling like the circling sunrise.

And the daughters of art are bands around me,

Like the fragrant blossoms of flowering spring.

And I am like one who yearns, deprived, amid

The alluring, unveiled procession of graceful maidens.

I desire that one; her sister draws near

To my hand, like the proud one humbled.

One beauty draws near; another beauty hides,

    Like radiance behind murky darkness.

This one gives, though I do not ask her,

And to that one I whisper a loser's confidences.

And a coquette—I beg her bounty,

While she refuses and fills my mind with hopes.

Her promise evokes the memory of Hatim,

And her fulfillment is an image of Madir.

How often she calls me, enticing my yearning,

And turns away like cunning milk.

And night is a graveyard dozing upon

The bier's dream and the gravedigger's lament.

The unease of silence is like a prostitute's dream,

    Who fell asleep between a libertine's arms;

Like an oppressor's hopes, toward whose

    Eyes a rebel's specter gazes.

Fearful, it steals along, and within its folds

Are the tyrant's arrogance and the unbeliever's conceit.

And the meteors are lost [in] its procession,

    Like a sleepless invalid's visions.

And the smoke of rancor in its lashes

Is like sins upon a wanton's honor.

The devil struts within it, and upon

Its lips are the victor's guffaws.

And the throbbing of silence tells that within

Its secrecy is the clamor of a leaping march.

And visions draw out, from behind the hills,

    The dawn of the resounding, overflowing day;

And confide to the unseen a penitent lament,

Longing for a smile from one who forgives.

And I, alone, converse tenderly with a calling voice

From the mouth of fragrant, pure revelation.

And the hut's stillness questions me:

Am I singing to heedless emptiness?

I said: I am a poet; within my solitude

Are a thousand worlds of the poet's phantoms.
